Babies and Kids crying is meant to be annoying. I have no doubt this is an evolution thing, in order for an adult to go an help the young when they can't communicate and to stop the annoying pitch in your head.

Imaging if crying was soothing and you fell asleep whilst the child is on fire in the next room

I don't think annoyance would be very useful as far as evolution goes. Because if you're annoyed, you're likely to become frustrated, which will ultimately lead to aggression or outright abandonment and neglect. So I think maybe the crying is more about making sure it simply gets your attention, so you tend to the baby's needs.

Which is why I don't mind the crying (it literally doesn't bother me). If it makes me feel anything unpleasant, it's the unpleasantness of knowing that it needs something and it's not getting it. And if that crying is met with anger, now I feel upset with the caregiver or parent because it's like, don't you get it? Don't you care? This helpless little thing needs you! That's why it's crying! If people just viewed it that way, and actually gave it what it needs when it needs it, the crying would end immediately.
