Very possible,
ADD a pricecut.

PS2 was whole 2001 at 299 euro.
PS3 now is at 399 euro and may go to 299-349 euro during Christmas. THAT will also spike sales by A LOT. =)

PS3 is a Million a Million Behind PS2 at this stage of it's life in europe.

Making it only 80% as popular as the PS2.

Even less so when you consider the fact PS2 was always short stocked during the holidays at this time of the lifespan and some consumers only buy systems durig the holidays. In 2001 i'm pretty sure the PS2 was shorstocked lots of places during the year as well.  January through April at the least... probably longer.

Considering holiday boosts are not linear, in otherwords a console that's half as popular doesn't receive half the boost... this isn't really likely.
