Russia's imperialism never left. We simply ignored it, a lot of us tried too hard to cater to Putin, we tried to bring him with us, some of us thought we could change him, some of us simply didn't care. We turned a blind eye to Transnistria, to Georgia, to Chechnya, to Crimea, we mostly let them off the hook for their atrocities in Syria and their blatant and dangerous assassinations on British soil using Novichok.

Putin has always been a monster and those surrounding him, they've always been bloodthirsty assholes but we let them off the hook, it ain't even like they tried to hide it but we kept giving Russia chance after chance until now. Like Russia threatening Britain ain't anything new either, it has been going on for years now, so I'm glad we're finally giving them a middle finger to fuck off and I'm embarrassed by the British citizens who want to bend over backwards for Russia.

I don't think Russia will change even after this but whatever, they can be a social pariah, they can be on their own, as long as Ukraine wins is all I care about, and we can get Ukraine into NATO and Russia will never threaten them again because they're cowards against NATO and we can ensure with sanctions they never get a military capability to be a threat to any neighbours in the long term.

Then Russians are just as untrustworthy as before and nothing will change that? That's what it looks like to me.

Imo. Yeah.

If they lose the war then they'll run back to Russia with their tail between their legs, a few people will be killed and changes to government will be made, I have zero faith that Putin will be replaced since it seems everyone is terrified of him. I have zero faith the Russian public will demand change since they seem as placated as North Koreans.

They'll be some fall guys, Putin will blame some people, they'll blame the West and say that NATO was involved in Ukraine and that's why they lost, they'll say they need to become the strongest military on Earth because of evil NATO and double down on that, they'll triple down on their nationalism, Russia vs The World. That is why the sanctions need to remain even after this war ends.

Look at what it took to get Germany and Japan to change, a complete and utter defeat in every aspect. America crushed Japan militarily, economically and emotionally and then occupied Japan after WW2 to reform and rebuild them. Germany the same, except they were divided into four (British, French, American, Soviet).

Nothing like that can happen for Russia and I don't think it should because it would require us getting directly involved, all we need is for Ukraine to win and likely a DMZ between Ukraine and Russia then to get Ukraine into NATO. Russia can then become a larger North Korea and fuck off, unable to threaten anyone near their borders again.

Sanctions Imo shouldn't even be started to be lifted until Putin steps down and only if the next leader expresses genuine condolences and efforts to try to help rebuild Ukraine (its sadly going to take like 10-20 years at least to rebuild Ukraine) but considering the shit that Putin is surrounded by, I don't see that happening, so they can stay in economic ruin.
