Basically said as well even if they build great games, the console market share won't change dramatically because they lost in the worst possible gen due to digital libraries becoming mainstream.

Spot on and some people need to learn to accept this. This should relieve people even more though that hardware isn't going anywhere. Microsoft recognises they won't ever come close to PlayStation but are still committed to hardware.

Not to throw shit on the fan but Nintendo losing that worst possible gen hasn’t prevented them from coming back big time. So this argument holds no ground. Yes, of course Switch was a revolutionary concept which helped a lot. But I don’t agree that 50m is the ceiling for Xbox either. They definitely can do a lot better than this and I wish they increase their efforts in doing better than they currently are. Everyone will benefit from a more close competition

It depends on your interpretation of close, cause I think PlayStation is on lock for 100m+ while Xbox definitely is not. Xbox will be 80m, if it's lucky. PlayStation will hit 100m+ with a breeze.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Switch, I don't think it's a good comparison because it doesn't compete as directly as PlayStation/Xbox do with each other for certain huge userbases, it's a wholly unique piece of hardware and it often sits as a secondary device amongst both Xbox and PlayStation users.

But there's nothing that can convince me that Xbox could get anywhere close to PS5 for this generation at least and by close I would mean something like a ~10m difference, I think we're looking at a 20m difference at minimum.

At best you can hope a lot of PlayStation fans use Xbox as a secondary device but they'll still be millions of PlayStation users locked into the ecosystem who only care about PlayStation exclusives and are too busy with them, or only care about CoD, or Fortnite, etc. Or just buy a PC. They may be convinced to buy an Xbox but PlayStation won't slow down with major exclusives either and just keep throwing them out to keep them busy.

I'll throw a bone and say maybe things can change next gen if Elder Scrolls is a launch period exclusive but there is still millions of CoD, Fortnite, etc. Fans who will be entrenched in the ecosystem and won't switch consoles for Elder Scrolls, those guys are going to be incredibly hard to convince to switch. I think next gen with Elder Scrolls exclusive will make things closer but PS will still win.

Xbox 360 had them because Xbox Live was vastly superior to PSN and basically set the standard for online play, now they're on even footing and Xbox has nothing unique in Online Play so all those millions who abandoned Xbox in the One era will now be a lot harder to convince to switch and abandon their ecosystem.
