There might be another front to this statement.
With the Wii, some developers are making versions for the PS2 and the Wii of some games from the same base. While we can debate the power of the consoles and the wisdom of this, the end result is that games continue to be released for the PS2, meaning not everyone has to upgrade. If the Wii was not doing so well, there would be no PS2 games and those games would have to get a new console to enjoy new titles. And odds are some would be Xbox 360s.
