To get back on topic, this quote from the article sounds like the dictionary definition of a fad.  Maybe MS PR hasn't really changed their perseption of the Wii.

"Everyone says that eventually the novelty will wear off, right? I think that a lot of the people that are buying that console today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right?

He is completely right in what he said.  The Wii has had amazing sales and has increased the video gaming market.  For an increase to happen, people who would not normally be in the video game market have entered into it.

What proof is there that a majority of Wii owners have never owned a previous console?  Either there are still some 150 million PS2/Xbox owners left out there, or many of these last gen console owners are upgrading to a Wii.

Japan is a perfect example of this, I would find it very hard to believe that a majority of the Japanese Wii owners have never owned a previous console.

If your (and MS) assumptions are correct, there is going to be a massive explosion to the size of the video game market.  According to the data available, and assuming most Wii owners are new to the video game market, most of the last gen market will upgrade to the PS360 eventually.  This would suggest that the video game market is going to more than double from last gen, and this is very unlikely to happen.

There is proof that the video game market is expanding.  The yearly revenue from the games industry has skyrocketed in the last couple years.  If it isn't caused by the Wii then what because it is the only thing trully selling bewildering amounts of hardware.

And just for reference he never said that the majority are new console owners...just a lot.  So don't try and put your own little spin on it buckaroo.

I agree, "a lot" is a PR word that I equate to more than half and that would be a definition of majority, but if you interperate "a lot" differently than me, I wouldn't mind how you interperate that PR phrase (just so we are not confusing each other).

So the amount of revenue has skyrocketed in the last few years, in what regions?  From my understanding the US and EU are the only two regions that have experienced non-inflation like revenue growths.  Now from the constant MS press releases, we should all know that MS is responsible for the most revenue in the US region.  This indicates that a large amount of the revenue in the video game market is from software sales (since the 360 is a SW beast).  This leads me to believe that a jump in revenue is primarly from a software price increase from last gen.  I may be assuming a few things here, but SW is what makes money and a $10/game increase could easily account for 60-70% of the revenue increase.
