Might be a double edge sword. Do not forget that Valve is actively trying to make their OS that doesn't need windows a hit. MS could potentially support a system that could in turn create an eco system that not only competes with Windows but could replace it as a gaming OS. |
That's fine, Microsoft is big lately on supporting everything, including rivals, they even had that big "Microsoft <3 Linux" push, Lol.
They've made efforts to support Linux quite a bit lately. Nobody uses Windows Store for Gaming anyway (I'm exaggerating but c'mon, they're 7th) and Linux will never become mainstream enough to take over Windows (the casual users are way bigger than the gaming market) plus Steam OS is exclusively for their handheld devices (which is built from Linux).
Lately it has felt like Windows has became a bit of an afterthought for Microsoft as well, they very clearly don't care about it anywhere near as much as the used to, it's way past the days of being a cornerstone of Microsoft's business, in fact, Microsoft literally removed describing Windows as a "cornerstone" of its business in its 10-K report, Lol.
Profits are probably way down due to the constantly giving it away for free, Cloud and Azure are way past it and eventually Xbox will as well (very soon if ABK passes) and while you can argue that Windows is a gateway to stuff like Azure/Office which are the money makers, I refer to what I said above, Linux will never overtake Windows as the mainstream OS and it's businesses who are the main buyers of Azure/Office, they sure as shit aren't leaving Windows for Linux, Lol.
As for the "Gaming" aspect, Windows is a Gaming OS as far as "people use Windows because it's default then go download Steam" Lol. If SteamOS takes off in a large way, they absolutely should double down on support for it and try to get a native Game Pass on it, it's worth sacrificing the tiny gaming userbase who actually use Windows Store.
