Well, it's difficult to compare to something that's not out yet.

Even if they have a pre-release 4080 at hand, they certainly also would have needed to sign an NDA before getting that one, so they can's share the performance of the 4080, not even simply a percentage value compared to what they have. As such, they can right now only legally compare to information that is readily available for the 4080 - like the TFlops, VRAM or power consumption, for instance.

Yea but it reeks desperation if anything. Why not wait until the 15th when we have the performance numbers as the reviews will be out a day before the actual launch. Then they would have an entire day to compare the performance of 7900XT/XTX against the 4080 before the 4080 launches. Instead all AMD has done since their event is avoid showing direct performance figures against Nvidia whether it be Lovelace or Ampere.
