I don't know enough about the conflict between these two countries but my understanding on a little of it is that Russia has a peacekeeping force between them both and if Azerbaijan were to go to war with Armenia, then Russia would have to defend them? Armenia is part of CSTO so if Russia didn't defend them, it would basically make CSTO look useless.

Kazakhstan is a member too but with their recent comments towards Russia, I doubt they'd be rushing to help them. Seems like Azerbaijan has smelt blood in the water with Russia's weak military and decided to take an opportunity to attack...Russia should fuck off out of Ukraine and defend someone who actually needs them.

Haven't researched the original conflict enough but Azerbaijan is definitely in the wrong for attacking recognized territory of Armenia and if Russia wasn't being a twat in Ukraine, then this probably wouldn't be happening. If Azerbaijan does a full-scale attack on Armenia and Russia doesn't defend them then this will end CSTO and create another conflict, what a mess.

Hopefully a ceasefire happens.

That conflict is rather complicated and can get very messy. I was following the 2020 war there and it basically seems like Russia used it as a way to bring Armenia back under its influence. I also seriously doubt if Azerbaijan invaded that Russia would intervene. They aren’t a benevolent protector, they’d only do it if they felt there was something in it for them.

The background is after the Soviet Union broke apart, an area of Azerbaijan that is majority Armenian wanted to breakaway and join Armenia. Azerbaijan weren’t exactly keen on this (the why is a much longer story) which caused the first Nagorno-Karabakh War they result in defacto independence for Artsakh (the Armenian name for Nagorno-Karabakh). Azerbaijan sort to reclaim the area in the 2020 and retook about half of the territories under Artsakh’s control.

But under the same principle it claims Artsakh as theirs, they say much of Armenia is also historically theirs, including the Armenian capital. The 2020 war ended with Armenia still controlling the central part of Artsakh, including the key city of Stepankert, with Russian peacekeepers there for 5 years. It was kinda obvious it was left as unfinished business and that the war would result sooner or later.

For those wondering about Turkey’s role, Azerbaijan is a Turkic state and is an very close ally of Turkey. They often describe themselves as ‘one nation, two states’.
