It's also possible that the lowest kit now has better specs, latency mostly, or that the cheapest kits back then are no longer on sale and now the cheapest ones are the ones that were a bit more expensive than them, creating the impression that prices have gone up.
Let's hope the analysts are right and RAM prices go down this second half of the year. Well, RAM and everything else.
