Pretty much, it really hurts his reputation imo. Like he keeps referencing how great of a value the 3000 series was at launch and due to that, it's still a great value because the performance is the same. But it feels like he is ignoring why the 3000 series was so good and what will make 4000 series also great. A 3060 Ti that had an MSRP of $400 was able to beat a 2080 Super that costed $700. And that's on 8nm Samshat node. 4000 series will be not only be on TSMCs node but a "custom" node made for Nvidia based on 5nm. So it's pretty safe to say that you will get 3080 performance around $400 and crazy performance at $700. So it's very dumb of him to tell people to not only go out there and buy it but to buy it because it's at MSRP. Like bruh... |
True and the jump 4000 series will be huge jump this upcoming generation. Same with RDNA 3. With RT performance allegedly be much improved alongside Raster.
Jay trying to scaremonger people into buying two year old tech, in fear of people not getting them is ill advised when everything's pointing to mass availability of 3000 series cards, even among the launch of next generation of cards. In fact, we're going to see more GPUs on the market from people upgrading and miners flogging off their stuff on marketplaces. He didn't really even mention that high end cards like the 3080Ti, 3090 and RX 6900XT have gone down significantly since his last video prior.
Yeah, a big reason why the 3000 series is so impressive, was due to the fairly lackluster Turing performance. And people didn't care much for the latter. Ampere is more in line with the usual performance jump. And like you said, it was also held back by Samsung's crappy node. Moving back TSMC on 5nm will be huge jump never mind IPC increases, higher clocks, TDP and significantly more cache.
While the 4070 series may be delayed to next year and other cards push back (mumors by Y'tubers) by a month top clear some more invertory.. double downing on it, isn't a good look. With inflation, higher cost of living in a lot of places around the world and with restrictions largely gone in most countries there's going to be less people interested in buying expensive GPU's. It isn't going to be anywhere near as bad as getting an Ampere at launch. There's always last gen stuff that will get discounted during that time.
