Your experience will vary depending on your DM and your co-players. My were also all newbies with different ideas about what they want - one wanted fantasy adventure full of exploration, wonder and social interactions, 2nd wanted to hack and slash, third one wanted to steal and loot gold and 4th wanted to explore and develop his character and get new stuff. I tend to provide them with all that and much more wrapped into a narrative onion, peeling layer after layer of the world they were playing in and revealing more and more complex shenanigans, but even then there were numerous occasions when they couldn't agree among themselves, so it can get a bit tense sometimes at the table (which is the ideal time for the old trope "Orc suddenly attack you").

I hope you're enjoying your first DnD experience and try to go easy on your DM - prepping sessions can be a lot of work and even 5e DnD that is considered fairly light has a lot of rules DM has to remember, so players can help a lot by knowing their own shit (as Matthew Colville, great DM would say) and knowing what they want to do when it's their turn.
