That was the main problem, yes. They tried to reinvent the game and the end result was worse and not fun to play, ruining the game and maybe even the franchise.

It's a problem that happens a lot in the videogame industry. The whole "If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It" idea doesn't go well with some creative minds that always try to bring something new, without stoping to think if the changes improve or worsen the game.
