Polyphony Digital used this trick with GT5P.  They used 1440x1080, I believe, in 16:9 ratio, and then used software to scale the resolution vertically to 1920x1080.

 

Wouldn't it have made far more sense to render it at 1280x1080 so that you're only ever scaling the image in one direction regardless of the output resolution (if it is a standard output resolution over 480p)?

 

 

I had my numbers mixed up.  It does in fact run at 1280x1080.
