 You'll be unconscious before the water gets into your lungs.  You go into shock before drowning, as the water passes your throat..  It ranges on how long it takes a person to lose consciousness when suffocating, it can go up to like 2 minutes of you struggling to find air I think.  Those 2 minutes would seem like an eternity.  On the flipside some people go into shock and be unconscious in mere seconds.
