With the release of 5800X3D taking a dump over majority of Alder Lake's 12th gen, I think it's time to acknowledge that AM4 might be the greatest platform to ever have released. The "Pascal" of CPU platforms so to speak...
AM4 allowed you to upgrade from 1700 > 2700 > 3700x > 5800x > 5800X3D.
Contrast that to Intel
Z170 allowed you to upgrade from 6700k to 7700k
Z390 allowed you to upgrade from 8700k to 9700k
Z490 allowed you to downgrade from 10900k to 11900k
Z690 allows you to upgrade from 12900k to 13900k
If you upgraded from 1700 to 5800X3D. You would be beating in gaming:
12700k
11900k
10900k
9900K
8700k
7700k
That is not to say there weren't a number of issues with AM4. RAM compatibility when Zen 1 launched, BIOS issues upgrading Zen 1 to Zen 3, preventing certain 400/300 series boards from enabling PCI-E gen 4 even though they were compatible, X570 fan nonsense and the biggest offence was AMD not supporting 5000 series CPUs with 300 series motherboards despite being on the same socket which they backtracked... After most people upgraded to 500 series... But still better than what Intel has done.
As we head towards AM5, the question will then be, will AMD pull another AM4? We have seen how greedy the company has gotten and sure, you could argue that some of it could be due to external pressure like 5000 series motherboard compatibility. But AMD is no longer in the "underdog" position. They no longer require "good will" to sell products. They are no longer in the brink of bankruptcy. They are now one of the players... And considering their recent actions... I don't think we will have another AM4 again. But I do hope to be proven wrong. Here's to the greatest platform that has been released in the CPU space. Remember it well gentlemen!
