Putin does understand that he is a sociopath and we aren’t, and that we don’t want a nuclear war, whereas he has far fewer qualms about starting one. He’s also counting on the 600 million people of military age in China to ride to his rescue if NATO decides to step in. 

Who cares? If protecting innocent lives results in a Nuclear war, we still did the right thing.
