Getting hot is normal but I'd give it some room if you can.
Wireless is fine but if you can go wired without any effort then I would.
The PS3 plays most but not all video formats so I would presume your file isn't supported - make sure you have latest firmware and hit official site to confirm supported formats.
Oh, and enjoy your new PS3...
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
