How about the "hero" as you call him grabs hold of the arrow shaft before it fires (probably better with a longbow than crossbow) and steps to the side so that when it fires he spins on the spot and stabs him with the arrow..... as ludicrous as that sounds it is more plausable than what you said.

Yeah, and that wouldn't work.... you said he was aiming at the "hero" if you kicked it it would just go above his head. It wouldn't work.
The only way I can see it possibly working is if the assailant was holding this crossbow like the automatic in scarface (really low by the hip)... which 1. you wouldn't do with a crossbow, they fire from the shoulder. And 2. would involve the hero being in an odd position to be able to kick underneath it.
