Yea I feel as though EGS is partly to blame. It's pretty clear that from FFVIIR port, EGS doesn't care about the quality of the port, just so long as it comes to their platform. And because of this, EGS and SE can just continue to make deals where SE gets to put in little to no effort and EGS will cover their costs even if it doesn't sell.

But regardless of which, it is quite the shame. I like various SE games and I'd rather play them on PC than anywhere else. But if it means I'll have to deal with nonsense, then I might either skip or wait for a deep sale.

S-E didn't need the EGS to launch the smartphone ports of their first Final Fantasy games on PC and call them remakes. So no, it's bot the existence of the EGS that allows Square-Enix to make lazy PC ports as they had been doing that for years.

The lack of real competition in the jRPG scene on PC and the brand name of their IPs is what allows them to keep doing that.

I am not saying EGS is the sole reason but I do think they are partly to blame. Sure Square released smartphone ports onto PC but they did that to other platforms as well. That's just SE being SE. But as far as Optimization is concerned, we haven't had anything as bad as FFVIIR from SE in a long time. FFXV for example, showcased a lot of PC technologies and a good number of SE games has had plenty of PC tech implemented such as DLSS and Ray Tracing with Guardians of the Galaxy and Tomb Raider.

But then you look at FFVIIR, it's like... Where did the PC optimization go? This should have been similar to their FFXV release as FFVIIR has been a pretty huge hit. Yet FFVIIR has regressed back to the age of Nier Automata levels. Now they did have KH which was a goodish port that's also EGS exclusive but what EGS should have done with FFVIIR is play test it and say no, this isn't good enough for what we are paying you before allowing SE to release it in such a state. Instead EGS is allowing terrible ports onto their store front and going forward, I fear that SE might abuse that. Because on Steam, there is no safety blanket... They goof up the port, the customers will hit the refund button, they lose sales. On EGS, they goof up the port, customers get refunded, SE will still make money cause EGS will cover the difference.
