How about the "hero" as you call him grabs hold of the arrow shaft before it fires (probably better with a longbow than crossbow) and steps to the side so that when it fires he spins on the spot and stabs him with the arrow..... as ludicrous as that sounds it is more plausable than what you said.

No no no... He kicks the crossbow, which hits its owner in the chest, causing it fire prematurely (sexual innuendo...) into the guys head.
