Speaking of great atmosphere, 'Call of Duty' is excellent in putting you right into the gritty reality of the era it is set in; World War II. This game is the video game version of the movie industry's Saving Private Ryan, and the tv industry's Band of Brothers. The awesome campaign follows a story of ordinary British, American and Russian soldiers on the frontline, as they witness and experience one of the darkest hours in human history. The game does its job of reeling you in and keeping you engaged exceptionally well, which is impressive.

Obviously the series grew to become one of the biggest video game franchises ever, but after it moved away from World War II and became more multiplayer focussed with all kinds of extra, complicated features I lost interest. An interest which I never regained even though there were multiple games in the series that returned to the era. This first game though, probably because it was powered by the great idTech 3 engine (better known as the Quake III engine) and how it handled matchmaking, is a first-person shooter game I actually played online regularly, a distinction not many games have.
