I don't think this is being done to compete with gamepass. I think this is being done just to improve their overall service. They wont be releasing their new games day 1 they've already stated this is not financially viable for them.
I remember a past feature that Sony was working on that was also being touted as their answer to GP and that's not what it was at all.
