Elite (84) is considered to be the first 3d open world game - I remember it getting it for C64, it was mind blowing experience at the time.
I remember Midwinter from Amiga, I liked it OK, though arguably, I'd say Hunter was much closer to actual sandbox 3D open world games of today (good ol' Amiga with myriad of overambitious games that ran at ridicoulously low frame rates).
