Meaning that the market for Hi-def gaming, online gaming, and all the features these consoles provide is indeed larger than the market for the Wii. Meaning if there were 2 choices, the Wii and a Hi-def console the Hi-def console would be winning out at this point and HDTV hasn't even grown to the point where it will be. That is not necessarily true (if you look at worldwide sales the Wii has outsold the combination of the PS3+XBox 360); but beyond that there is another (very important) system that has been selling well in North America and Europe. Combine the PS2 and the Wii sales and you will see that (roughly) 60% of home consoles sold in North America do not have High definition gaming, not much in the way of an online strategy, and don't have media center capabilities ... I expect these numbers will remain as dramatic in February and will actually get worse for HD gaming in march (with the release of God of War 2)
World wide that is slightly true yes. Mainly because of Japan. I'm saying here in the US we can see it is true. 244k+294K > 436K Yeah, but a PS2 purchase contributes more than likely to a future PS3 purchase eventually. A person buying a PS2 now is not likely even interested in this gen yet (including the Wii). But in a few years, prices will be down and they might make the decision to get a PS3. Most consumers associate future purchases with their initial product purchase. I don't see any compelling reason for the numbers to change in any dramatic way until someone drops their price or a major title is released. The major titles for PS3 are still a ways off, likely this fall, 360 also has heavy hitters in the fall. I see a price drop for the 360 this year and for the PS3 when 360 price drops. Worldwide the figures are likely to change as the PS3 is launched in Europe.
