WiiU and Switch are both HD platforms that's why support was stopped for the former no platform holder can support two HD platforms at the same time they would have stunted the growth of the Switch in doing so, look at the games that came to 3DS and look at the HD versions the resources required are worlds apart in comparison as mentioned above Nintendo's platforms have gotten support after the release of their successor so that's not really an accurate merit to go by. Odyssey being in development for 3 years means it would have started development around the time when NX was announced which is the point they already knew WiiU couldn't be saved.

As far as the claim that Lite was plan b that's incorrect the Hybrid model already has portability it was impossible for it to not take off in anyway because Nintendo had a monopoly on the portable side of things laid out for them essentially the monopoly was the plan b as it would get the platform in people's homes regardless if they wanted a Nintendo home console or not as for the portable market it was the only choice. What the Lite actually is for is to change households from having one Switch to multiple the same way you could find more than one DS, GB etc... in one household as people buy another model for their partner or kids to use, in regards to skepticism the only skepticism were the usual loud minority on forums the actual reception to Switch was far more positive from the majority outside of that group hence why Switch took of as it did as people weren't looking at it as 300 quid for a portable.
