Base model only has 64GB eMMC as Storage. Dock is purchased separately and the controller is not detachable in that state.

And I doubt this thing works well for Strategy games and old games which is a lot of the stuff I play on Steam.

Don't worry, I'm not a fan either.

First, it's too damn heavy. Funny how some people were riling against the weight of the Wii U gamepad but don't seem to mind the weight of this thing despite it being much heavier.

The storage is too small. Keep in mind there's a big chunk used already with the OS, especially with the 64 GiB version. And newer games fill up the space very quickly.

Finally, despite the weight, the battery life is lower than on the Switch, even the OG model, who got bashed for having a low batttery life.

And under heavy stress, I fear it could get pretty noisy too, though that might not be the case considering how thick this handheld is - thicker than some laptops. 

A lot of it has to do with the capabilities and target audience is where the difference comes in.

The wiiU gamepad was too heavy for what it did which is effectively just stream games from the box onto it's display. This is much heavier yes but it's a full blown PC. You can obviously use both but the capabilities of this far exceed any console in function.

The $399 storage option is a joke. So realistically, the $529 is the real price point. But it's understandable that they had to cut corners for $399 as they are putting PC components, very good ones at that, inside of a handheld.

And yes, the battery life is lower than on the switch cause you know... It's a full blown PC! And you can get 4 hours out of something like Portal so it varies depending on game. Considering the components it offers, the battery is pretty justifiable.

Personally, it almost sounds like you have something against this which I am not sure why that is. This isn't trying to be a switch replacement but instead, trying to bring something new to the table. This lowers the barrier to entry for PC gaming and while it's not for everyone, there are plenty of things to like about it. And it's only possible thanks to AMD.
