Then, we found out that one of t he components was faulty and had to ask replacements for them (the faulty bit turned out to be the RAM). So yeah, it doesn't matter if it's a MSoft account or a local account, if you get new hardware, you'll need a new license.

You didnt need a new license. I had to do this with my new PC and all i need was to deactivate the license from my old PC and transfer it to my new one. Having an MS account made this pretty easy for me. So im shocked that MS couldnt help you or guide you with the steps to do it.

Well, you got a more willing person at the other end of the phone.

Given that I didn't have a PC to deactivate, as I had send the parts back, I was given no other option than getting a new license for what was, according to them, a new PC.
