I'm going to do this based on the release date of the platform I've played it on, just to keep it simple on myself.

For me it was really hard to fill out years 2016 and 2020.  In 2016 I was mostly doing retro gaming, and for 2020...well I still have a pretty good sized backlog.  In a year or two I might have more 2020 games to list.  On the other hand I had to leave several great games off of 2018.  Broken Age, Valkyria Chronicles 4, and Smash Bros are all great games that I would rank higher than the bottom game of any of my other years.
