Nintendo went of of sync with traditional generations at the time of the Wii, which was the GameCube reloaded with a different controller. The WiiU was a very late 7th gen extension competing with PS360 on the level of technology and game ports. Switch was WiiU reloaded in a more successful form of a handheld with most Nintendo games getting ported. We might get a powerful Switch Pro or a Switch 2 in 2.5 years which should qualify as 9th gen.
