Talking about the appeal. Gears doesn't have the broad appeal it used to. Cover shooters are no longer the hot thing like they were in the 7th gen. They fell out of favor. So again they don't move the needle in sales. People were not buying an Xbox in droves for those series anymore regardless of the quality of the game itself.

Well the majority of people that buy Microsoft and Sony consoles don't buy them because of a strong first party lineup they buy them mostly to play third party titles Nintendo consoles are the only ones that get bought mostly because of their strong first party games.

Given the lackluster sales of Xbox One I'd say that's not as true for Xbox. Sony yeah. 360 was doing its best when Halo and Gears were hot IPs. Traditionally true for Nintendo and still true for Switch. I believe Switch is the least reliant on that given how good its third-party support is. It is so loaded with 3rd party exclusives and Japanese AA games. Perfect indie machine. Yeah First [arty selling amazing but other stuff selling well enough to keep supporting it. Not been the case for them in a long long time. MS is clear the understood they need much stronger first-party output and stuff. Hence buying so many studios.
