For me the ending was quite good.
My only issue is that I think he didn't need to wipe 80% of regular humans, destroying all the military structures and ending all capability of transforming in Titans should be enough. But let's say that it makes a lot more sense to kill all your enemies to achieve peace than to sacrifice all your kin to give piece to unknow people that hate your guts.
I guess people just aren't used to sad ending and about how war is unavoidable and how most of our existence is futile and in the end nothing ever changes.
