Stories in games are usually nothing special... I'm perfectly fine with games which use story as filler to glue levels together. In this category there's notably Super Mario games and Ninja Gaiden games.

Cut-scenes are often cool to look at, but I don't think I'd stand something like MGS4... I'd probably fall asleep and wake up an hour later dripping saliva on the controller. In moderation, yeah.

PS: When I see someone saying a game sucks because the story isn't good or is non-existing, I tend to assume that person doesn't like the genre and/or the gameplay in the game. If you need a story to enjoy a game maybe you shouldn't be playing the game anyway (unless the story is what attracts you the most).
