In Nintendo's case, they really need studios that can help make their games. Nintendo has so many IPs that they can easily have a studio do the ones they can't or wont make. Metroid is a good example of this. In general, Nintendo should try to grow, to either increase their internal output or have subsidiaries help cover the load.
