I was telling a friend of mine back in October, while the Steelers were undefeated, that not having any type of running game at all, and having to throw the ball over 40 times a game was going to become a major issue later in the season. Lo and behold, the Steelers are averaging 55 yards rushing and 44 pass attempts per game over the past 4 games and have lost 3 of them in a row. Defenses have no fear of the Steelers backfield or the play action, so linebackers are free to hang back in coverage disrupt routes, break up passes, and force Big Ben into the kind of mistakes he wasn't making earlier in the year. This all stems from the decision to do absolutely nothing about Le'veon Bell leaving the team. Bell rushed for 1,291 yards in 2017, the last year he suited up as a Steeler. Pittsburgh made do without during Bell's contract holdout in 2018 with James Conner rushing for 973 yards. The moment Bell signed with the Jets for the 2019 season though, something should have been done. Instead, Tomlin and the organization did nothing, and Conner led the Steelers in rushing for 2019 with 464 yards in 10 starts. Surely at that point, it was evident that this backfield was not going to cut it in the NFL. But no, the Steelers came into 2020 with no major changes at halfback, and Conner leads the Steelers with 155 yards in 10 starts. It's abysmal, and it's something that should have been addressed 2 years ago. |
You a Steeler's fan? ... we comin' for that division, homie! XD
