Tbf, EA was doing their "on the house" program for around 2-3 years when Origin was in it's early stages, then they stopped when they came out with their Origin sub service. GoG is still doing the odd free game give-away here and there as well. The ones found on Steam are primarily due to devs wanting to do give-aways though.
I feel like Epic are playing the long game in the worst way possible tbh.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
