The thing with Nvidia is that they aren't the type of company to give AMD a free pass. There's way too much of a gap between 3080 and 3090 to not put something in the middle that competes with 6900XT. Now they can discount the 3090 but I doubt they will do that cause it will piss off 3090 buyers. Instead creating a new sku makes more sense.
I doubt outside of Amd favored titles and with buffs disabled, the 6900XT can actually beat the 3090 as AMDs slide showed with those on. So I think 3080 Ti would be the perfect counter.
