I'm guessing it will slot right in the middle. 3090 is around 10-11% faster on average over the 3080. So maybe 5-6% on average and price it $200-300 higher ($900-$1000) and put it up against the 6900XT. With more VRAM than a regular 3080 it should at least be a bit more future proofed for a few more years. There's not much they can do with the 8nm Samsung node and architecture in terms of pushing performance. They are already pushing these cards to the limit and going way above the efficiency threshold.
I think they are waiting for AMD to show their lineup first and then they'll think of a strategy on how to counter their cards in each segment.
