Its quite simple. Its because people(in general) associate sex with affection, and that kind of affection with "true" love, and often forget that true love comes in more ways than one.Humanity culture is at "fault" here though for having this association, not the individual persons. That's also why people are extra insistent on what gender they like, or what gender they are, because since they think sex is vital to loving someone, their gender in this case is directly linked to love/being loved.(This is my opinion guys)

That's why you see stupid phrases (in my opinion) like "Oh, he/she is "just" a friend", as if the only way to built a true connection, for most people, is if you have sex/ sexually attractive with/to him/her. If you don't have that urge, then he/she is "just" a friend, and it's often not regarded as someone worth sacrificing for (something meaningful in your life, as you often see people in films sacrifice for their boyfriends/girlfriends/wife/husbands etc.)

As it is obvious, this is just my opinion, but it's something based on things I have seen in my life and how people around me usually treat this subject.
