On dual shock 3, 4, wii classic controller pro, I didn't need to press anything, I think it's only for switching between xinput and direct input. Check if it is still reconcinsed as a xbox gamepad. you can also update the adapter firmware.
If your notebook has bluetooth, you could just use a tool like wiiusoft, but the adapter is still better.
