akuma999: Okami gets better.

some others: Nintendo hates voice acting.

Jman: great thread...loved the deception. MGS4 may have lots of cutscenes, but so do other games that people love.

That is why metroid prime 3, battalion wars 2, and somewhat in ssbb, all have voice acting. I think it was more like nintendo couldn't fit anything else on the GC disc. I am expecting most nintendo games that aren't mario to have voice acting.

Perhaps I should specify: Nintendo hates voice acting for their main franchise characters. Samus didn't talk much. Link doesn't talk. Mario mumbles and says "it's-a-mii." I think they think it will ruin the characters. They are almost as iconic as Disney characters, some of which used t not talk as well. For games, perhaps it's not needed...but if you are trying to add a story it would be nice, imo.

Please tell me how the main character talking adds to the story.

Uh, well, usually the protagonist in a story communicates in some way. Most genres have moved away from reading text, so having some characters talk and the main hero be silent is kind of odd. One argument has always been that the hero is the player, so it shouldn't talk, but I don't think that's a factor, personally. No one really thinks they are Mario, I think, and people can still indentify with characters that have their own voice and personality.

That is more on how the story is presented than the story itself. Sometimes not having the main character talk adds to the way the story is presented too. FOr example. A metroid game wouldn't be a metroid game if samus talked. This is because you are usually alone with samus in most metroid games. She is made to be mysterious, and if she talked you would probably learn more about her. Now when you do find new information about her it means alot more than if she talked, because you want to learn more about her. I could say the same thing for link.

There are many games that didn't having talking characters that do now. I just thnk Nintendo is afraid of not doing it well, so they don't. I don't think it's a creative decision. Nintendo isn't the best story-teller, anyway. "if she talked you would probably learn more about her." Yeah, good point...that's kinda the idea.
