If all you have to offer are third party games, you get Xbox One results. If you have third party + first party, you get PS4 results. The PS3 botched its launch very much because of the same reasons the XB One did, but in the end Sony was able to outsell the 360 because of their strong first party, especially in late gen. You need both, man, you need both. That's why Microsoft is buying studios left and right now. That's also one of the reasons why Nintendo is doing better than in a long time, they have always had a strong first party but now they have gotten third party back on board in a new way. |
Consoles sell mostly on multiplats doesn’t mean exclusives don’t matter. People buy consoles to play games, obviously the more games you have, the more appealing your console will be to some people. But most buy consoles to play Calls of Doody and NBA and Fortnite with their friends. That’s why best selling lists for consoles are (outside of Nintendo) always full of multiplats. I know you need both. MS was extremely lacking this gen in that regard and now they’re writing checks not really to bolster their lineup to sell consoles but to push GamePass. I think without GamePass they would have been content with their acquisitions from a couple years ago.
