It's to prevent them from getting pregnant. Legend has it that when two people stare into each others eyes, it creates a magical gateway for the sperm so it can travel into the women's womb without the physical sex aspect. When a female covers one eye, the sperm drops off half way thus it prevents the pregnancy.
