NES.

The NES was so good that Nintendo basically had a monopoly with the NES, but people today still love to dump all over it.  The games were so good that it started a ton of amazing franchises: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Metal Gear, etc....  It also had a ton of other fun and innovative games: Blaster Master, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, Ultima 4, River City Ransom, etc....

A lot of people see this and just see the established franchises that have gradually gotten "better" over the years.  I feel this is entirely the wrong way to look at it.  Every other system lacks originality compared to the NES.  To me it feels like game makers aren't really trying anymore.  There used to be a lot of original games.  Nowadays, it has gotten especially bad with annual franchises, tons of sequels and very few original games.  Originality goes a long way toward making a game fun, and the NES was full of original games that were trying to push the envelope.
