I guess that's one way to look at it. Yes, they have different priorities, but it can't be denied that MS is making an honest go at the console spae too. Having two console SKUs releasing in the same month with the PS5 is proof of this. If they weren't they did just make a $299 XSS and a $599 XSX, have them in very limited supply and call it a day. They also wouldn't bother with any Xboxexclusives at all and also release their games on the PS5. |
Any other way than trying their best would be seen as a complete failure. If they wanna stay in the console market, they need to push it. Otherwise they would loose it completely. Maybe the supply is limited to some point considering how the Xbox One brand went for them. They changed their strategy, though. Their console is their cheapest entry to their library.
I wouldn't call them Xbox exclusives since they do release on PC. Rather Microsoft exclusives, but even some manage to end up on Switch.
They are competing in the games market and that counts the Switch, too. They share some games altogether.
But Microsoft and Sony are not competing directly anymore like they did with Xbox360 and PS3. These times are over. So, it really doesn't matter if Sony sells more console than Microsoft, since Microsoft shares it's userbase with PC and partly (little tiny bit) with Nintendo.
Microsoft generates the most money with their console brand, though.
