Gamepass would cost more though since Sony would still want/need royalties. They don't do all the R&D and planning to sell hardware at break even or a small loss so you can play games on it for free. The 12% platform royalty per game is what makes the relatively cheap hardware possible. Of course if MS is going to hand over 12% of their gross game pass revenue to Sony, it could happen. And you probably still need ps+ to play gamepass games online :/

yeah but cost has never been the concern. If I can get it for, say, $5 more on PS5, that's worth it to not have to buy an Xbox or upgrade my PC.

I doubt it's just going to be $5, game pass as it is now is not profitable / sustainable.

Besides that, Sony won't allow a competing service on their system that undercuts PS Now so the total monthly game pass price to use on ps would have to be over $19.99 a month. Or rather, Sony would probably want $10 a month to have you play game pass games instead of ps now games. Or maybe less if MS allows PS Now on XBox in return.

Anyway, doubt it will ever happen since Sony does want you to buy their consoles and getting people hooked on gamepass, then opting to drop playstation to get gamepass cheaper on a different device or simply keep playing on the old device is not in Sony's best interest. It's the typical embrace, extend, extinguish strategy MS uses.
