To be fair, red dead redemption example is not a good comparison with tlou2 at all.
And about Raiden, yeah if that was today it would be very very different and people would go nuts. Different time. I remember reading a walkthrough in a magazine at that time and not understanding why snake was blonde and why there were no closer pictures of him. At least in that game you played with snake for a few hours, which were the best hours in the game in my opinion, and later on snake aka Pliskim was there by your side as your mentor.
