They're not afraid of socialism. Most people actually want more of it.
There is a certain vocal minority in the states that has been fed with nothing but false ideas of freedom and communism that they get triggered by keywords without having to actually think or educate themselves.
The sad part is that the majority of people who have been weaponized against socialism are sufferung from the lack of it but they have been so brainwashed that they don't even realize it. This indoctrination starts at a very young age so you cannot even really blame them.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
