I think its more like investing in Unreal Engine technology. Sony is in the movie business as well and this kind of partnership would benefit both parties in that regard.
Unreal wanting to branch out more into the movie/TV business and Sony putting investing more into that tech in their entertainment/gaming business. UE might blow up and be the game changer in the movies industry for SFX in the years ahead. Since its a very unique attributes is that UE can render such high quality scenes in real-time. UE4 is used by Disney and Pixar currently.
