I don't really see the point of external storage. I'm not going to wait 30 minutes to copy a game to HDD then another 30 minutes to copy it back when I want to play it again. You might as well re-install from disc or re-download over night. Spending a lot of money on a fast 2tb SSD to speed up the 'back up' process feels like a waste. I rather spend that on game I can re-download or re-install any time.

Anyway game sizes should get smaller next gen without the need to store light maps and multiple levels of detail (some still needed probably but not as much as currently) The hardware decompression will also help with game sizes.
